Illustration Friday: Sight

Storm Codes illustration by Christina Rodriguez.

Happy Friday! This week's Illustration Friday submission is from the award-winning Storm Codes. Here, Katy and her mother catch sight of her father's Great Lakes steamship, The Edward B. Greene, following a harrowing November storm in Duluth, MN.

Storm Codes was recognized with the Jeanette Fair Award, a Silver Mom's Choice Award, and an Honorable Mention from the Northwest Minnesota Book Awards, among other honors. Want a copy signed by both the author and me? I'm selling autographed paperbacks with FREE SHIPPING here.

Have a great weekend, everyone - AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM!

Illustration Friday: Asleep

During a fierce November storm, Katy falls asleep imagining that her heartbeat is sending a secret code to her sailor father to come home safely. The image depicts the next morning in her Duluth, Minnesota home, as the sun starts to melt the ice from her bedroom window.

My illustration for this week's Illustration Friday is from the children’s book, Storm Codes. Have a great weekend, everybody!

Illustration Friday: Warning

Storm Codes illustration by Christina Rodriguez.

This small illustration for this week's Illustration Friday is a storm warning flag, which is flown to communicate with other sailors and ships in anticipation of severe weather. I painted this for the title page of the award-winning Storm Codes, a special children’s story about an ice storm on the Great Lakes, sailors’ codes, and a daughter’s heartfelt message of love.

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Illustration Friday: Burning

Storm Codes illustration by Christina Rodriguez.

After a November storm knocks out the electricity in Katy’s Duluth, Minnesota home one dark night, she and her mother must rely on the flame burning in their hurricane lamp for light and comfort. This week’s submission for Illustration Friday is from Storm Codes a locally written, illustrated, and published children’s book.

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Illustration Friday: Ripple

Ripple illustration by Christina Rodriguez.

It’s a very special Illustration Friday this week!  Artist extraordinaire Kelly Light has organized a project called Ripple. Artists are creating sketched, painted, or digitally-printed 2.5”x3.5” cards for sale at $10 apiece. The $10.00 is a donation to help the animal victims of the Deep Water Horizon Gulf Oil Spill, and every penny is donated.

The two non-profit organizations that are benefitting are The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies and The International Bird Rescue Research Center. To purchase this card, donate directly to one of the non-profits and email the confirmation and your address to ripplesketches@verizon.net. I will then mail you the signed digital print, matted and ready for placement in a 5”x7” frame.

To sweeten the deal, if you donate $20, I’ll also send you a signed paperback copy of Storm Codes.  Just include to whom you’d like the book inscribed in your confirmation email.

Please donate today!  Thanks to Kelly for setting up this project and for everyone’s support and we try to make a difference.

UPDATE: Both the print and the book have sold!  Thanks so much to the kind donors!
